1. any one of various small, usually brownish birds common in North and South America, such as the chipping sparrow, song sparrow, field sparrow, sage sparrow, swamp sparrow, and vesper sparrow.
2. any one of various related birds native to Europe, Asia, and Africa. English sparrows and some other kinds live near houses; others live in woods and fields.
3. any one of several similar birds, such as the hedge sparrow or dunnock of Europe (a warbler).
